CONSRUCTION OF the first compressor station in Khorgos, in the NW Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, began on 22 July, marking the start of the construction of the second Chinese West-to-East gas pipeline project. The project is the largest pipeline project in the world; with a designed gas transmission capacity of 30bn cum/yr, and a total length of 9,100km, it begins at Khorgos Port in Xinjiang, from where the route passes through 14 provinces, autonomous regions, and cities before reaching Shanghai, South China’s Guangdong Province, and Hong Kong. Currently the project is developing en route to deliver natural gas from Turkmenistan by the end of 2009.
