The NMPP project encompasses the replacement of 544km of 24 inch diameter pipeline from Durban to Gauteng, which forms part of the 705 km Durban to Johannesburg Pipeline.

The Durban to Johannesburg Pipeline transports refined petroleum products including gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, from the two refineries in Durban as well as imported petroleum products.

Under the contract ABB will supply drive systems with medium voltage drives, transformers and medium voltage flame proof motors. The company will also deliver variable speed drive systems for each pump, which provide more efficient and reliable operations while using less energy when compared with traditional fixed speed motors.

ABB Head of Process Automation Division Veli-Matti Reinikkala said “This delivery will help improve reliability and performance of the pipeline equipment, while maximising energy efficiency and reducing operating costs.”
