The newly-installed Thales SCADA system enables remote control and supervision of the pipeline facilities. Based on the company’s modular software platform, which is tailored to the specific requirements of oil storage and transportation, the system manages all security applications along the pipeline, and will allow operators to supervise and control the various devices used to transport the crude oil to pumping stations, valves and delivery terminals. Thales also supplied a secure communications system based on a combination of broadband IP satellite and a GPRS backup system. This is believed to be the first-ever communication system designed specifically for the remote control and supervision of an oil pipeline.

Advanced SCADA for SPSE pipeline
Tue, 27 May 2008
THALES recently completed delivery of a latest-generation SCADA solution for the storage and delivery facilities for the South European Pipeline Co (SPSE) oil pipeline. The new system covers all of the oil storage and transport zones along the 1,000-km network, which runs from Fos-sur-Mer, France, on the Mediterranean, to Karlsruhe in Germany. The pipeline transports around 440,000brl/d – amounting to 30% of all crude oil transported by pipeline in Europe – to four refineries and a petrochemicals plant.
