Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajed has given approval for the construction of a proposed 950 km gas pipeline, which will pass through Bangladesh to link Myanmar and India, according to online publication Mint.
“The energy adviser to the prime minister of Bangladesh, Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury, communicated Bangladesh’s willingness to be part of the pipeline project,” Indian Power Secretary H.S. Brahma is reported to have said after a recent visit to Bangladesh.
The proposed pipeline from Block A-1, located offshore north west Myanmar, to India through Bangladesh has been under discussion for the past 13 years, but has been repeatedly halted by political tension.
If constructed, the pipeline is likely to become a key source of supply for the Indian National Gas Grid.
