Qatar has agreed to consider supplying 500 MMcf of natural gas to Bangladesh, which will require the construction of a new pipeline to transmit gas from a receiving terminal in the Bay of Bengal to a secure point in southeastern port city of Chittagong to feed the national gas grid.
The agreement was made during a meeting in Doha between representatives of Qatar and a Bangladeshi delegation, led by Energy Secretary Mohammad Masbahuddin.
“We had a successful discussion with top officials of Qatar’s state-owned petroleum agency,” a member of the delegation said. “They showed a positive indication to supply about 500 MMcf [of] liquefied gas to meet our deficit.”
To transport the gas, a 100 km, 30 inch diameter gas pipeline will need to be constructed from the receiving terminal to Chittagong. The state-owned Gas Transmission Company of Bangladesh has already shown an interest in building the pipeline, which will require an investment of $US100 million.
Bangladesh will also need to expand its infrastructure to include an LNG terminal in the bay with a floating storage and re-gasification unit.
