Barbados-Trinidad gas pipeline going ahead
Mon, 10 September 2007
THE GOVERNMENT of Barbados is going ahead with the long-planned project to source natural gas from Trinidad & Tobago via pipeline. Officials from both countries recently met to discuss the initiative, although Energy and Environment Minister, Elizabeth Thompson, told the Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC) that discussions were still at the preliminary stages. She made the comments as the Barbados government hosted a clarification meeting for the international oil companies it is trying to encourage to drill for oil in the island’s territorial waters in a bid to secure longer-term oil sources for the country.
“Let me be frank and say that Barbados is running out of natural gas,” Ms Thompson told CMC. “It will be some time before the efforts in the offshore sector yield results. In the meantime, it is imperative that the country has a source of natural gas to fuel its economy and to extend the existing service to the many people who have made applications for service as well as ensure current customers can get natural gas. There, therefore, has to be an interim arrangement.”
The Barbados-Trinidad & Tobago project is part of the a larger Eastern Caribbean gas pipeline project being developed also to deliver natural gas to St Lucia, Dominica, Martinique, and Guadeloupe.
