The statement outlines the next steps to be taken for the project and invites the assistance of the European Commission and the international financial institutions with regard to preparation and related studies for the project.

European Commissioner for Energy Günther Oettinger said that the Commission was ready to support the preparation and implementation of the project as well as offer financial support under regional development and enlargements programs.

“This gas interconnector is part of our strategy to link with our neighbours, which also includes interconnections with Romania, Greece and the possibility of physical reverse flow with Turkey,” said Mr Traykov.

Mr Škundrić added “Together with the substantial underground gas storage capacities currently being developed in Banatski Dvor, and in the future also in Vojvodina, the bi-directional Bulgaria – Serbia Gas Pipeline will increase the flexibility of Serbia’s gas supply.”

The signature ceremony was also witnessed by Srbijagas General Director Dušan Bajatović, Bulgartransgas Executive Director Ivan Drenovichki, and DG Energy Director General Philip Lowe.
