RUSSIA and Turkmenistan have agreed to accelerate development of the proposed Caspian gas pipeline project following talks between Gazprom's CEO Alexei Miller, Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov, and Deputy Prime Minister Tachberdy Tagyyev. "Turkmenistan can start the implementation of the project earlier than it was initially scheduled," Mr Berdymukhammedov said after the meeting, referring to a declaration on the construction of pipeline signed on 12 May by the Russian, Kazakh, and Turkmen presidents. On completion in 2012, the 510-km long pipeline will run along the coast of the Caspian Sea – 360km of which will be in Turkmenistan and 150km through Kazakhstan – and connect with the existing Central Asia-Center gas pipeline network on the Russian-Kazakh border. The decision to speed-up construction of the pipeline followed reports on 27 November that Gazprom has signed a contract amendment for the supply of gas from Turkmenistan.
