Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov, Secretary of Guangdong Provincial Party Committee Wang Yang, Acting Governor Zhu Xiaodan and China National Petroleum Corporation Chairman Jiang Jiemin attended the ceremony in Shenzhen.

China and Turkmenistan signed a natural gas co-operation agreement in July 2007. Mr Berdymukhamedov's visit to China resulted in a new gas supply agreement which has added 25 Bcm to the annual delivery, making the total gas supply from Turkmenistan to China 65 Bcm.

Connected at Horgos, in China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous region, the Central Asia – China Gas Pipeline and the Second West–East Gas Pipeline comprise some of the longest gas pipelines in the world.

The pipeline has maintained safe and stable operation since becoming operational in December 2009. Up to now, the pipeline has cumulatively delivered 17.5 Bcm of natural gas from Turkmenistan to China.
