THE DEPUTY chairman of Russia’s gas giant Gazprom, Aleksandr Ananenkov, and Natalya Partasova, the chairwoman of the constituent republic of Chuvashia’s government, have agreed to transfer Chuvashia’s pipeline network to Gazprom as payment for debts, Gazprom said in a recent statement.
The statement added that Chuvashia may also construct a pipeline to the city of Cheboksary to compensate for the region’s debt to Gazprom. The amount of Chuvashia’s debt to Gazprom, however, was not made public.
During the discussion, special attention was given to the setting of gas prices in the region, since current domestic prices do not allow for the implementation of Gazprom-planned investment projects, including projects in Chuvashia, Gazprom added. Given the current price situation, the investment projects would not be profitable, the statement said, although both sides agreed that a gradual increase in gas prices would lead to a growth of regional funds.
