CAIRN INDIA has begun construction of the country’s first heated-oil pipeline, which will waxy crude from the company’s the Mangala terminal in Barmer in Rajasthan to Salaya in Gujarat. Engineering and construction major Larsen and Toubro is laying the 590-km long, 24-in, pipeline for the Indian subsidiary of Cairn UK. Cairn is understood also to be considering extending the pipeline to Bhogad, 80km from Salaya, which is close to the Marine National Park, in order to avoid any environmental hazard to the area.
The pipes are being manufactured by Jindal Saw at a contract value of approximately $200 million. A parallel 8-in gas pipeline also is being built.
Once in operation, the Rajasthan field is expected to produce 175,000brl/d of oil, bringing making a significant contribution to reducing India's current oil supply and demand imbalance. The oil pipeline is to be completed by the second half of 2009.
A planned 32 intermediate power-supply and heating stations will be built along the pipeline's route, and will maintain the required temperature (above 65oC) within the pipeline.
