The East African Community (EAC) Secretariat has signed a contract with Denmark’s COWI consulting firm, which is partnering with COWI Tanzania Limited and Runji & Partners of Kenya, to carry out a feasibility study on the Dar es Salaam – Tanga – Mombasa Natural Gas Pipeline project.
The project entails construction of approximately 530 km of natural gas pipeline from Dar es Salaam to Tanga and Mombasa, including related facilities and provision for possible future expansion of the pipeline to supply other key consumption centres such as Moshi and Arusha.
The EAC Director for Productive and Social Sector Dr Caleb Nyamajeje Weggoro has said that the $US500,000 study is expected to be completed by February 2011.
Dr Weggoro made the announcement at the opening of the fifth meeting of the EAC Sectoral Council on Energy, held in Arusha, Tanzania.
