The agreement was signed by China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) President Jiang Jiemin and KazMunaiGas President Kairgeldy Kabyldin, and was witnessed by China’s National People’s Congress Standing Committee Chairman Wu Bangguo and Kazakh First Deputy Prime Minister Umirzak Shukeyev.

Earlier that day, Mr Jiemin met with Mr Kabyldin and Kazakh Oil and Gas Minister Sauat Mynbayev to discuss oil and gas co-operation between the two countries.

The 1,475 km Kazkhstan – China gas pipeline is part of the 6,500 km, 42 inch diameter Turkmenistan – China gas pipeline. It will start from Beyneu, Mangghystau, and will meet the Central Asia – China Gas Pipeline at Shymkent, Kazakhstan. The pipeline will have an initial design capacity of 10 Bcm/a, which can be expanded to 15 Bcm/a.

On 21 September, CNPC and Uzbekneftegaz signed an agreement on construction and operation of Line C of the Uzbekistan section. Line C of the Central Asia – China Gas Pipeline is expected to begin construction at the beginning of 2012, and start supplying gas in January 2014.
