DIRECT Assessment Technology Partners (DATP) and Technical Toolboxes, Inc (TTI) of Houston have completed the first comprehensive market study to assist product and service companies interested in the growing direct-assessment market in the pipeline industry. The study's objectives have been to: Determine the size and predicted growth of the North American direct-assessment market for 2003-2007. Provide information and education to companies interested in expanding current offerings or entering what is seen as this lucrative market. Compile a list of product/service vendors with offerings that could support the market. Provide access to updated information. The study shows that the actual pipeline integrity spending in North America in 2001 and 2002 was, on average, significantly less than that projected by these same companies in 2000, even with significant additions to the miles of pipeline inspected. The results indicate that the average gas transmission company actually spent 18% less than their original 2002 budget, with the primary reasons given being continued regulatory uncertainty coupled with stock price devaluations of companies that were involved in the energy trading business. Another consequence of the new requirements is that several pipeline companies are choosing to liquidate pipeline assets by sale or transfer, due to potential integrity liabilities and the lack of financial resources to meet these obligations. The results of this market study suggest the following: The direct-assessment market will grow much faster and become a much bigger market than the in-line inspection (pigging) market. The direct-assessment market will peak in 2007. One of the main drivers for this growth is increased use of direct-assessment, resulting in a growth of the estimated number of direct examinations (bellholes) to increase from less than 4,000/year to between 10,000-20,000/year, starting in 2003 (INGAA). Regulatory support and project management consulting services will grow 300% over the next five years. New repair techniques and technologies will be needed to mitigate projected repair and maintenance costs.
