The completion of the feasibility study was announced by Deputy Secretary General (Productive and Social Sectors) Jean Claude Nsengiyumva at a meeting of the East Africa Community (EAC) Partner States in Arusha, Tanzania.

The pipeline is expected to be 124–430 km in length, have a 24 inch diameter and run from Ubunga in Dar es Salaam to Vipingo in Mombasa.

A similar feasibility study for the extension of the oil products pipeline from Kigali to Bujumbura was set to start after the EAC Secretariat secured funding from the African Development Bank (ADB). The Kigali – Bujumbura pipeline is planned to allow petroleum products to be accessed from the proposed refinery to be located in Uganda, as well as the existing refinery in Mombasa and international markets.

Mr Nsengiyumva said “There is need, therefore, to hasten the commencement of the study for the Kampala – Kigali section, which we understand was delayed to await conclusion of the feasibility study on refinery development in Uganda.”
