Eastern section of Second West-East Gas Pipeline operational

China National Petroleum Corporation has put the 4,978 km eastern section of China’s Second West-East Gas Pipeline into operation.
The arrival of Turkmenistan natural gas at Guangzhou marked the full completion and operation of the pipeline, which is the first in China to introduce natural gas from abroad.
According to the company, the Second West-East Gas Pipeline drew the heaviest investment in the history of the country, and boasts the longest distance, the highest transporting pressure and steel grade, and the heaviest workload in the world.
With a total investment of $US22 billion, the project includes one trunkline and eight branches which travel 8,704 km through 15 provinces and regions from Xinjiang's Horgos to Shanghai in the east, and to the south reaches at Guangzhou and Hong Kong. The pipeline is designed to deliver 30 Bcm/a of gas for 30 years.
China National Petroleum Corporation said that to date, the Second West-East Gas Pipeline has delivered accumulatively over 11.3 Bcm of natural gas from Central Asia, with sections connected to other pipelines in China reaching 21 provinces and regions.

The remaining engineering of the project is now in full swing and is expected to be completed by the end of 2012.
