NIGERIA’S Escravos-Warri crude oil pipeline has been recommissioned after 20 months of intensive repair work. The crude oil pipeline which carries crude from Escravos to the Warri refinery facility, was vandalized in March, 2003, and efforts have been continuing by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to put the line back to full operation.
The contract for the repair of the Escravos crude oil pipeline was awarded to Billfinger Berger Goss in 2003, and its completion ensured the restreaming of the Warri Refining and Petrochemicals Company Ltd (WRPC), which has an installed production capacity of 125,000brl/d. According to a representative of the consultant, Ian Appleby of ILF Consulting Engineering, the crude oil pipeline suffered seven line breaks, at different points during the period, and a coffer dam had to be built to enable the team of engineers get full accessibility to the crude line to effect repairs.
