The project is part of a regional gas pipeline project that aims to transport gas from Egypt to Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, and beyond; the project agreements were signed on 25 January in the presence of the Prime Ministers of Jordan, Egypt, Syria and Lebanon. Natural gas is already being supplied from Egypt to a thermal power plant in Aqaba in Jordan but, upon financial closure, the project company Jordanian Egyptian Fajr for Natural Gas Transmission and Supply, will commence construction of a 393-km pipeline running from Aqaba to Rehab in the north of the country, close to the Syrian border. Under the terms of the concession, the project company will operate the pipeline for a 30-40years, and gas sales in the first 10 years within Jordan are expected to be at least $1.5 billion. Legal adviser to the Government of Jordan is UK-based Trowers & Hamlins, whilst Charles River Associates is project consultant and Mapstone is acting as financial consultant. Financing is being arranged by the Jordanian Housing Bank of Trade and Finance and the National Bank of Egypt.
