RUSSIA’S natural gas giant Gazprom is seeking to expand its current ventures in the Turkish market, industry sources in Ankara said recently; officials said the government is also backing Gazprom’s plans for more business in Turkey.
An official said that Turkey’s Energy Ministry had commissioned a technical group to study potential cooperation between Turkey and Russia in Turkey’s energy market. “We aim to finish this study in September when Russia’s president, Vladimir Putin, visits Turkey,” the official said. Recently Turkish Energy Minister Hilmi Guler met with Gazprom’s CEO, Alexiy Miller, and the Russian’s company’s Turkish partners, Bosporus and state pipeline company Botas. Guler said possibilities of new joint-venture projects had been discussed during the meeting. He said Gazprom was interested in underground gas storage, natural gas distribution tenders as well as privatization and transmission investments. “Gazprom is keen to invest in all phases from extraction to end-user,” Guler said. He also said that a new energy sector cooperation agreement would be signed by Ankara and Moscow during Putin’s official visit to Turkey.
