Sponsored by CTDUT, Penspen and PipeWay, the Practical Pigging Operations course was one of a number being organised by Clarion and Tiratsoo Technical. The course involves hands-on exercises using CTDUT’s 14 inch diameter, 120 m long water and air-driven test loop. Run over the five days, participants typically perform up to nine different runs of various tools including cleaning, geometry and intelligent tools provided by PipeWay during the course.

Subjects covered in the syllabus include the design and operation of pig trap doors; types of utility tool and intelligent tool; launch/receive trap design; launching and receiving utility and intelligent tools; how to assess a tool’s performance; signalling and pig location; locating and reporting sample defects; and, pigging safety: procedures and performance.
