The Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Purnomo Yusgiantoro said that the "supports would include the exemption of import tax for materials and capital goods needed for gas network construction. We decided to take necessary steps to help the speed-up the project construction so that we can immediately take advantage of this energy source," he is reported to have said. The government has initiated the Integrated Indonesian Gas Pipeline (IIGP) project, which will distribute gas from production points in East Kalimantan, South Sumatra, Riau and East Java to industrial and household consumers in Java and Sumatra. The project, which is estimated to cost $3 billion with a combined transmission length of over 2,000km, is expected to be completed by 2009, and will be implemented by state gas utility firm PT Perusahaan Gas Negara (PGN). Purnomo said aside from fiscal support, the government would also provide non-fiscal support in the form of speeding-up the construction approval and tender processes for investors willing to team-up with PGN. The first two sections will be the Gresik-Semarang and the Semarang-Cirebon transmission lines, which the government-sponsored oil and gas regulator BP Migas has undertaken to issue tenders for within three or four months; the 480-km of pipeline is expected to be completed in 2008.
