Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was present at the inauguration ceremony.

The pipeline, which extends approximately 900 km from the Assaluyen gas field in southwest Iran to Iranshahr in the southeast, has a transmission capacity of 750 MMcm/a of natural gas.

Originally envisaged as the Iran – Pakistan – India Pipeline, New Delhi did not participate in the later stages of negotiations regarding the project due to security concerns. However, after suspending talks for more than two years, the Indian government is planning to hold a bilateral meeting in Tehran to discuss the IP Pipeline.

Indian Petroleum Secretary S. Sundareshan has said that the Iranian government proposed holding talks on the project and India has agreed.

The last trilateral meeting between Iran, Pakistan and India to discuss the pipeline was held in July 2007.
