The two governments signed an agreement in 2003 to build a 360-km pipeline from Arish through Sinai to Aqaba and northwards to the Syrian border to transport Egyptian gas to Jordan and later to Syria, Lebanon, and Turkey. Egypt agreed to supply Jordan with 2.3bn cum/yr of gas at a preferential price for 15 years. Around 85% of Jordan's electricity is now generated by Egyptian gas, according to Mr Shraideh, who confirmed that the project was "on track and gas supplies remain unchanged". The Egyptian Ambassador to Jordan, Ahmad Rizq, also dismissed the report, saying that his country was committed to the agreement.
