The inspection company will inspect 2400km of the Kern River pipeline system, which runs from SW Wyoming to Bakersfield, California. The pipeline system is designed to transport 1.7bn cuf/d of gas which, when converted to megawatts of electricity, is enough energy to power approximately 10 million homes. BJ’s Calgary division will use a range of its in-line inspection tools, including the Geopig mechanical caliper and its Vectra magnetic-flux leakage tool, which is equipped with ‘active speed control’ and gas by-pass system, allowing the velocity to be kept constant throughout an inspection run. The gas by-pass feature makes it also possible to perform inspections without disrupting gas flow, which will be highly beneficial to Kern River and its customers in Utah, Nevada, and California who rely upon a consistent supply of natural gas year-round. Inspection of the first, 307-km long, section of 36-in mainline pipe, from Salt Lake to Elberta, is scheduled to commence shortly. The remainder of the 1093-km 36-in mainline and the 1003-km loopline will be completed over the remainder of the four-year contract. In addition, a number of 12-in, 16-in, and 24-in laterals will also be inspected during the contract period.
