LITHUANIA’S AB Mazeikiu Nafta, the only refinery in the Baltic States, has submitted a development plan to Lithuania’s Ministry of Economy for the transportation of petroleum products. The plan provides will allow the company to ensure its uninterrupted refining activities while continuing to strengthening the energy security of Lithuania, Mazeikiu Nafta said in a written statement.
The plan is a part of Mazeikiu Nafta's 'value creation programme' and has been prepared by PKN Orlen, the majority shareholder in the company. The development plan provides for two scenarios for construction of a new petroleum product pipeline: either from Mazeikiai to Butinge, or from Mazeikiai to Klaipeda. The company is looking for more efficient and environmentally-acceptable methods of petroleum product transportation, and is therefore analysing several routes for the product pipeline. The new pipeline will allow Mazeikiu Nafta to expand its technical capabilities and to increase the export of its petroleum products. Currently, the products are shipped to AB Klaipedos Nafta's terminal by railway. AB Mazeikiu Nafta exports more than 70% of its output to Western Europe, the USA, Canada, and other countries. In 2006, the company's exports accounted for almost one quarter of the national exports.
