ONE OF THE major priorities for Malawi, within the context of the Nacala Development Corridor, is to seek support for building a pipeline from the northern Mozambican port of Nacala to the Malawian capital, Lilongwe.
Speaking at the Nacala Corridor Investors’ Conference on 27 Februart, Malawian President Bakili Muluzi emphasized the importance for his landlocked country to lower the transport costs of fuel. At the moment, much of Malawi’s fuel reaches it in road tankers making the long journey from South African ports.
President Muluzi said the best solution for importing fuel into his country would be a pipeline from Nacala, the nearest port. He added that plans for an oil refinery in Lilongwe are also under discussion.
