McConnel Dowell has completed a 1,877 m long horizontal directional drill (HDD) as part of works on the Integrated Refinery and Petrochemical Public Company (IRPC) Natural Gas Pipeline Project in Rayong, Thailand.
The team used a 280 t rig to drill a 4 inch diameter pilot hole at depths of approximately 30 m over a distance of 1,817 m.
A smaller rig was set up at the planned exit point and was used to steer a second, 3.5 inch diameter drill string over 60 m to intersect the cutting head of the rig. A third HDD rig was then used to install a larger diameter drill string over the top of the 3.5 inch diameter drill string prior to installing a 14 inch diameter casing pipe to the intersect point.
The pipeline is being constructed to deliver gas from PTT’s Third Transmission Parallel Gas pipeline to downstream customers at the IRPC in Rayong.
McConnell Dowell Constructors Thai were awarded the engineering, procurement and construction contract for the IRPC Gas Pipeline project by PTT in September 2009.
