The Medgaz consortium, who is currently constructing a 210 km gas pipeline between Algeria and Spain, has successfully passed the certification process by the international environmental management standard ISO 14001:2004, which certifies the environmental quality of the infrastructure and processes that integrate all project management.
The ISO 14001 specifies requirements for an Environmental Management System that allows an organisation to develop and implement a policy and objectives taking into account legal requirements and information about significant environmental aspects.
The system ensures Medgaz complies with existing environmental legislation and environmental policy.
The consortium has also signed a collaboration agreement with the Port of Almeria and the University of Almeria to develop a research program on environmental management.
The Medgaz pipeline is a strategic project for Algeria, Spain, and the rest of Europe, supplying natural gas directly from Algeria, without requiring transit through third countries. Commissioning of the 8 Bcm capacity gas pipeline is anticipated for June 2010, with tests on the pipeline scheduled to begin in March 2010.
