Caterpillar and PipeLine Machinery International (PLM) worked closely with PLM’s customers to find suitable projects on which to test the machines in a real work scenario.
These ‘field follows’ have been working on pipeline jobs throughout North America for most of 2011. The machines have proven their capabilities and features on the right-of-way in addition to the thorough workout done at the Caterpillar test facility.
“Our product support co-ordinators have worked closely with our customers trying out the new pipelayers,” said PLM Executive Vice President and General Manager Tony Fernandez.
“PLM has worked closely with the head mechanics, the lowering in superintendents and the project managers to make sure the machines deliver on their promise, and we’ve had some very positive feedback.”

Topping the list of critical requirements for pipeliners is safety and reliability, and these new machines enhance Caterpillar’s ability to deliver. With Caterpillar’s worldwide network of dealers and PLM’s pipeline experts co-ordinating service and support through those dealers, the Cat advantage equates to keeping pipeline crews up and running.
New features
- A new undercarriage design leads to enhanced stability. The track roller frame has been lengthened and the rear idler repositioned to enhance slope capability.
- A new counterweight profile allows more weight to be added to the machine, further contributing to increased lift capacity.
- Improved controls make for greater operator comfort and productivity. A new control handle puts all boom and hook functions in the right hand of the operator, making the controls simpler and more intuitive. The controls also have a similar look and feel to many Cat track-type tractors.
- A new heavy-duty Pullmaster winch and updated hydraulic system have been added for greater machine productivity. The winch profile has also been lowered to enhance visibility and aid transport.
- Improved hydraulics offer greater response and more precise control, and an engine speed increment/decrement feature allows the operator to increase or decrease engine speed to a set level with two push-button switches.
- A bolt-on block horn has been added to the hard nose of the machine for more convenient transport/storage of the block set.
- A new block set design reduces the profile for enhanced visibility to the pipe. The design also allows customers to take advantage of the benefits of the available, 24 foot boom design.
- Dual brake pedals provide enhanced manoeuvrability and steering control, especially in slope applications.
- Additional mirrors enhance visibility for the operator. A new ladder design provides added durability and serviceability, as well as enhanced access/egress to the operator station.
- The PL87 shipping envelope has been reduced providing an optimum fit for rail transport.
Lift capacity
The PL83 has a rated lifting capacity of 72,575 kg, and the PL87 has a rated lifting capacity of 97,069 kg.
The Cat C15 engine with ACERT technology provides the power for the PL83 and PL87. Performing at full-rated net power of 231 kW and 273 kW at 1,850 revolutions per minute respectively, the large displacement and high torque rise provides the power needed on challenging jobs.
Matched to the high-efficiency torque divider and electronically controlled power shift transmission, the C15 ACERT engine will provide years of dependable service.
