IN ITS ATTEMPT to further exploit the economic potential of northern Nigeria, local power firm Geometric Power has announced plans to build two gas-fired power-generating plants at Kaduna and Kano. The first phase of the project, which is to be in Kaduna, is expected to generate 1,000MW, while a further 1,000-MW capacity plant will be constructed in Kano, under the second phase of the project.
According to the public affairs manager of Geometric Power, Oseloka Zikora, the project will involve the construction of a 735-km long gas pipeline under a public-private partnership deal with the Federal Government. The pipeline will run from Calabar via Ajaokuta, to Kaduna to feed the gas-fired turbine plants. The project known as K3, is based on the 'island' model independent of the national grid, with dedicated transmission lines from the power plants to the benefiting states.
