WINGAS Group completed construction work on the Ostsee Pipeline Anbindungs Leitung (OPAL), which connects to the Nord Stream Pipeline, after 22 months of construction and approximately 50,000 girth welds.

OPAL runs from the Baltic Sea coast through the federal states Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Brandenburg, and Saxony to the Czech Republic. The pipeline has a transport capacity of 36 Bcm/a of natural gas and has one compressor station at Radeland.

WINGAS Chairman Dr Gerhard König said “Thanks to the support of all those involved we have managed to complete OPAL according to schedule. Now we are ready to transport the natural gas from the reserves in Siberia to the consumers in Germany and in neighbouring European countries.”

The pipeline is expected to be commissioned in the autumn following testing at the same time as the first of the two Nord Stream pipelines.
