The lecture series began in March with a look at failure investigations. This was a lively and engaging presentation, made by Mike Dale of Macaw Engineering. In May, David Brown, the General Manager of the remote Spadeadam testing centre discussed his facility’s work in supporting research into carbon capture and storage.
Attendees at the Case Studies Lecture Series came from a range of the region's leading organisations including Penspen, GE, Atkins, Macaw, and Newcastle and Northumbria Universities.

“The region is home to some of the sector's leading companies as well as the renowned masters degrees in pipeline and subsea engineering at Newcastle University, one of only a handful of institutions worldwide to offer such courses. We are particularly proud of the role we play in introducing industry veterans to student engineers, the next generation of pipeline professionals.
“Our branch hosts a variety of events including technical and social gatherings. Our technical paper sessions are held in the sumptuous lecture theatre of the Neville Hall, a Grade II listed building and home of the North of England Mining Institute,” said Mr Dafea said.
Branch Secretary Clive Ward of Coria Consulting added “Our branch of PIPE is fast becoming the home of pipeline engineering in the region.”
The series is supported by Clarion Technical Conferences and Technical Publishers of Houston, Texas. In conjunction with Tiratsoo Technical, a division of Great Southern Press, Clarion is organising the Second International Forum on the Transportation of CO2 by Pipeline, which will be held in Newcastle/Gateshead on 22–23 June 2011.
