An opening ceremony has been held in the Polish town of Cieszyn and on the Czech side near the village of Chotébuz for the approximately 31.5 km gas pipeline interconnector between Poland and the Czech Republic.
Czech Republic Prime Minister Petr Neczas and Republic of Poland Prime Minister Donald Tusk took part in the ceremony to open the pipeline, which is a joint venture between Polish gas transmission operator Gaz-System and Czech transmission system operator Net4Gas.
The interconnection project consisted of two parts. Gaz-System built a 22 km gas pipeline from the Polish-Czech border in the Cieszyn region to Skoczów, as well as a metering station in the region of Cieszyn. Pipeline construction on the Polish side of the border was completed in November 2010 and the metering station was completed in June 2011.
On the Czech side, Net4Gas constructed an approximately 9.5 km gas pipeline running from the Polish-Czech border to the Czech transmission system connection point in Tranovice, in the cadastral area of Zpupna Lhota. The Czech part of the interconnector pipeline only took five months to construct and was completed in September 2011.
Both sections were constructed from 20 inch diameter pipe and have an operating pressure of 6.3 MPa.

The pipeline will have an initial capacity of approximately 500 MMcm/a, however, Gaz-System and Net4Gas are currently in the process of defining the scope of works necessary to increase the capacity to approximately 2.5 Bcm/a and to convert the pipeline to bi-directional operation.
