RWE plans new subsea pipeline to import Russian gas

THE Czech branch of German energy company RWE is planning construction of a gas pipeline that will connect the country to the NordStream gas line between Russia and Germany. The new pipeline, called Project Gazela, would run from the north Bohemian town of Hora Svate Kateiny to Waidhaus, a German town near the Czech border, where it would connect to the OPAL branch of NordStream, west of the border. “The decision is tied to the existence of larger connecting pipelines, namely OPAL and NordStream,” Jitka Kadava, spokeswoman for RWE’s Czech branch, said.
RWE is currently discussing three possible route options for the construction of Gazela, each of which would connect Waidhaus to the existing north Bohemian gas pipeline, which traverses the country from Hora Svate Kateiny to south Moravia. RWE's final decision is expected before the end of 2008, and the company estimates the project would cost around $72.2 million, Ms Kadava said. If approved, construction will start in 2009, the same year that NordStream expects to start transporting gas from Vyborg in Russia to Greifswald in Germany.
