THE Swedish government is reported to be concerned that the planned North East Europe gas pipeline under the Baltic could have serious consequences for Swedish security, local media reported in mid-November.
The Nord Stream pipeline will pass through the Swedish economic zone in the Baltic, and a maintenance platform is to be built 40km off the island of Gotland, the largest island in the Baltic Sea. A Swedish intelligence officer apparently told the Svenska Dagbladet newspaper that the pipeline laying operations could be used to place a chain of sonar microphones, which would allow Russia to follow the movements of shipping, providing it with an early warning defence system in the Baltic.
