Algeria, Niger and Nigeria have signed an agreement to construct the Trans-Saharan gas pipeline to run from Nigeria to Algeria for the transportation of gas to Europe.
The proposed 4,128 km pipeline is expected to cost $US10 billion and have a diameter of 48–56 inches, with a transportation capacity of 30 Bcm/a of gas.
Associated gas storage stations to be developed are expected to cost an additional $US3 billion.
The project is proposed to be operational by 2015, however a starting date for construction has not yet been announced.
The pipeline is to be built and operated jointly by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and Algerian company Sonatrach. NNPC and Sonatrach would hold a 90 per cent stake in the project, with the Repulblic of Niger holding the remaining 10 per cent.
