The contractor will be diverting a 114-m section of 24-in welded steel pipe under the course of the 44-km long road at Norton Canes, near Cannock. The pipe will be laid in a concrete-bottomed trench constructed by main contractor CAMBBA. Lawrence’s five-week contract entails extending the trench to the motorway embankments and laying the pipe. Both ends of the new section will be connected to existing pipelines, with the redundant section sealed off. The pipe will be radiographed to ensure its integrity against faults or leaks. The work commenced in early April, and will be completed shortly. The M6 Toll will run from the north of Junction 11 of the M6 around the northern and eastern sides of Birmingham to rejoin the M6 near Junction 4. The road is due to open in 2004. ,LAWRENCE has also secured a £100,000-contract from Transco to divert a high-pressure gas main under the £450-million Birmingham Northern Relief Road, now called the M6 Toll.
