TURKISH Energy Minister Hilmi Guler has said that Turkey expects Kazakhstan to provide crude oil to fill a pipeline transferring Azerbaijan’s oil to Western markets through the country’s Mediterranean port of Ceyhan.
The delivery of oil from the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline is expected to start next year with Georgia also acting as a transit country in the project. “We wish the project to be called Aktau-Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan. This is also the wish of our President (Ahmet Necdet Sezer), Prime Minister (Recep Tayyip Erdogan) and government,” Guler said. Noting that the Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum (BTE) natural gas pipeline, which will run parallel to that of the BTC, was also about to be realized, Guler said, “The main target of the BTE project is Europe.” Turkey and Greece last year signed an agreement to connect their gas pipeline networks, Guler pointed out, adding that natural gas from Azerbaijan will be transported to Italy via Greece with the BTE project.
