Using electromagnetic waves to explore the subsurface, the company’s Interragator II, supplied by Carlow-based Vermeer distributor B-TRAC Equipment, can improve the accuracy in locating existing services, and provide invaluable site information prior to design, excavation, or drilling. Working from existing ground level, the Interragator II system rapidly maps depth and location information of utilities as small as 20mm to a maximum depth of 460mm, and larger utilities to a depth of 6.1m, although these depths can vary depending on soil conditions. The machine can also be used to identify bedrock and water-table locations. The simple survey procedure begins with the operator setting up the depth range and soil type. The GPR system then automatically adjusts the electronic parameters to ensure proper data collection. The operator has to enter some general peripheral information such as a survey wheel and printer/display preferences, and data collection is then as simple as pushing a button and moving the antenna along the survey path. Survey information is displayed in real time and is automatically stored for later review.
