NEW blue polyethylene ProFuse pipe from Uponor has proven itself a useful performer in difficult terrain near Bodelwyddan, North Wales, where directional drilling ensured no disruption to the busy Abergele-Rhyl road.
Dwr Cymru Welsh Water (DCWW) identified the need to replace certain sections of an existing 16bar GRP main, due to its high burst frequencies, and the company's capital alliance partner Laing Utilities selected PE 100 ProFuse for the replacement of this particular 940-m section. The 500-mm diameter 16-bar pipe, supplied in 12-m sections, was part of the new large-diameter range launched by Uponor in 2002, and the work took place in early autumn last year.
Site liaison technician Kevin Coleman of Laing was pleased with the pipe's performance, saying: "Although there is a lot of preparation work involved in this type of project, once the pipe is welded together everything else is surprisingly quick. It was important to us to be able to work quickly due to the difficult nature of the ground conditions; we couldn't leave the trenches open long, and ProFuse was ideal for this purpose." Training was an important factor in being able to handle new technology and, once familiar with the new methods, site personnel soon appreciated the many benefits of the PE pipe, such as the no-scrape peelable outer skin.
