THE West Africa Gas Pipeline Co (WAPCo) has delivered to Ghana’s Volta River Authority (VRA) its first full day of gas supply through the new West African gas pipeline (WAGP). This initial supply, delivered to VRA’s Takoradi thermal plant at Aboadze near Takoradi, can power one 110-MW turbine.
WAPCo, owner and operator of the WAGP brought gas to Ghana in December, 2008, and has been ready to supply the VRA with gas since then. On 8 April, 2009, commissioning of VRA's facilities commenced and gas has been supplied since then at intermittent rates to support commissioning. Now that commissioning is complete, gas is being supplied at a steady rate of approximately 30m cuft/d.
WAPCo is working to complete outstanding work on its compressor station at Lagos Beach, in Nigeria, and regulating and metering stations in Tema, Cotonou, and Lome by the end of the year. Once this next phase of the construction is complete, WAPCo will have the capability to deliver to the VRA enough gas to power four 110-MW turbines as well as supply customers in Benin and Togo.
