THE EUROPEAN UNION’S DG10 Directorate has announced that it is to provide funding for a major study to develop detailed plans for the White Stream pipeline that is being planned from Georgia to Romania. The 1100-km long pipeline will provide an alternative export route for gas from Central Asia (see our story on 30 November) and is being proposed by GUEU-White Stream Pipeline Co Ltd, one of the co-owners of which is UK-based PSE UK.
The pipeline, the proposed route of which crosses the Black Sea at up to 2000m water depth, will be one of the most challenging projects of its type. Diameters being suggested vary from 22-30in: with the increasing diameter comes increasing wall thickness and therefore pipe weight, which makes pipelaying a critically-important aspect of the final design. Speaking recently, PSE UK's chairman, Roberto Pirani, told PipeWire that he hopes the new study will be completed in-house in a year, at which time the plans for the pipeline can be finalized and investors sought for this innovative and interesting project. GUEU-White Stream Pipeline Co Ltd's directors are to meet shortly in order to start progressing the project.
